Ordinary things
Title: Ordinary Things 2015 Site Specific Installation A project created for Oh! Open House (Joo Chiat Edition), the artist worked with the residents Mr and Mrs Tan, whom owned a shophouse along Joo Chiat. Inspired by the metaphor of the SG50 rose; a plastic celebratory kitsch object used to represent love towards Singapore’s 50th anniversary celebration, the artist adopts the kitschy metaphor and adorns the old shophouse with the various colours, mimicking both the tiles of the floor. Is this the aesthetic of Singapore? Kitschy - beauty? In the process, the artist recollects connections made with Mr. and Mrs Tan, including a story shared by Mrs Tan on making her own artificial flowers for a bouquet during her wedding day. Not knowing to laugh or to cry, is that the aesthetic of the Singaporean kitsch?
